We’re not getting a kitten, I said. They’re too rambunctious and needy, I said. No way, I said.

Obviously we got a kitten.

And of course, he’s rambunctious and needy.

Since my kids are now 7 and 8 I had been enjoying a few blissful years of going to the bathroom alone and sleeping through the night… without someone laying on my face.

That’s over now.

Oh well. It was a good run.

Kittens need a lot of stimulation and toys hopefully help draw their attention away from your furniture and shoes.

Since pet supplies can get expensive and toys seem like another money suck to add to the list, I decided to make our own from upcycled items around the house and a little catnip.

Crinkly Catnip Tube

Supplies:  Fabric scrap

Crinkly bag (leftover from packaging or a microwave popcorn wrapper)

Catnip, Leftover Easter bag ‘grass’ or other filler (not shown)

Ruler, Pencil, Scissors, Glue Gun and String (not shown)

Cut fabric scrap about 6″ wide and 4″ long.

Fill crinkly bag with filler and catnip.

Fold up the catnip bag and roll it up in the fabric, overlapping the fabric, and glue it closed.

Tie a piece of string tight to each end.

Shaker Catnip Tube

Supplies: Fabric scrap

Toilet paper tube, Plastic play necklace (or other noise maker like coins)

Catnip, Ruler, Pencil, Scissors, Glue Gun and String

Cut fabric scrap about 6″ wide and 6″ long.

Cut toilet paper tube in half and fold down the sides at one end.

Put necklace (or other noise makers) and catnip inside tube and fold down the sides as you did on the other end.

Roll the fabric around the tube, overlapping the fabric, and glue it closed.

Tie a piece of string tight to each end.

Ribbon Wand

Supplies: Ribbon,

Cake pop stick (that’s what I had lying around, you can use any sort of stick)

Scissors (not shown) and Glue Gun

Cut ribbon into 6-8 strips of varying length between 12″ and 24″ long.

Gather the ends of the ribbon together and tie them in a knot around one end of the stick.

Cut a small piece of ribbon and wrap it around the end of the stick just below the knot and glue it in place…

This will help to keep the knot from sliding off the end of the stick.

Pipe Cleaner Spring

Supplies: Pipe cleaners

Twist the pipe cleaner around your finger.

Seriously, that’s it. And this is by far my cat’s favorite toy.

And a perfect example of why you shouldn’t spend a lot of money on cat toys. 😉
