I would say every family with kids struggles with screen-time issues. If your family doesn’t… well then, please take my children. 🙂
We police it fairly well in my house with rules for certain days of the week and time limits. But it never fails, when it’s time to get off the screens my children turn into boneless jelly monsters sliding around on the floor complaining that they have absolutely no idea what to do with themselves.
And although I feel in no way responsible for their entertainment planning, and I fully believe in the benefit of boredom… it is best when we can find some activities to do together as a family.
If you’re low on inspiration or time to figure something out… here are some ideas for screen-free family night activities that everyone will love.

Some of the ideas here are pulled from my Giant List of Activities for a No-Spend Weekend. But this list is focused on one of our favorite nights of the week, family night. The nights when we all gather together and laugh a lot. I hope my kids will think of these nights fondly when they grow up.
Get Active
As a runner and fit mom, I’m obviously a big fan of being active. And there are ways to get up and get the blood pumping during family night.
- Have a dance party
- Put on a talent show
- Make a living room obstacle course
- Do a scavenger hunt around the house

Make It Tasty
One of our favorite, slightly out-of-the-box things to do on family night is to have a food challenge. Can you tell we’re big fans of baking shows? Usually, my husband and I are the contestants and the kids are the judges. 🙂
- Cupcake baking challenge
- Pizza baking challenge

Get Your Game On
The most obvious pick for a fun family night is games. We love to play all kinds of games and can fill a whole evening with favorites like monopoly and scrabble.
- Charades
- Pictionary
- Board games
- Don’t Laugh Challenge

One of our favorite new games is the Don’t Laugh Challenge.
My son loves silly jokes and joke books… and my husband’s ‘dad joke’ game is strong… so there’s a lot of silly jokes told in our house on the daily. So a game centered around jokes is perfect for us!

The Don’t Laugh Challenge is a series of books that put your funny bone to the ultimate test.
The challenge is for the players to sit face to face and take turns reading jokes to each other. Each laugh equals 1 point for the joke teller and the first to get to a certain amount of points wins.

My son and daughter had a blast facing off with the Sibling Edition.

The books also have a Silly Scenario section where you take turns acting out silly things trying to get the other person to laugh.

There are lots of editions in the Don’t Laugh Challenge series like Dad vs. Kid, Unicorn Challenge and editions for holidays like Christmas, Halloween, Easter and Valentine’s Day. Check out all the options here.
