Disney truly is the happiest place on earth. Even when you’re running 13 miles. I know from experience. Huffing and puffing through mile five, instead of being miserable, was actually magical because of the glitter and lights of Cinderella’s castle.
But all those magic miles come at a price. It’s a price thousands of people are willing to pay each year. And you might be too. But it helps to know just how much you’ll really spend to enjoy a runDisney weekend.
Do you know the feeling when you fall in love with a city? The architecture inspires you, the history fascinates you, the style invigorates you or the beauty just fills your soul? And best of all is when all of that happens at the same time.
I’d heard a little about St Augustine, Florida over the years, mostly from friends who simply gushed about loving it so much. But you never truly understand until you experience it for yourself.
And that’s what we recently did. And all of those things I mentioned fell into place.
Let me show you why. (more…)
Part of being frugal is being smart.
And one of the smartest things you can do with your spending is to get some of your money back.
In fact, if you’re not taking advantage of rebates, you’re basically throwing money away.
In 2017 we booked a long weekend trip to Key West. Then Hurricane Irma happened just a few months before our visit. The category 4 made landfall 20 miles east of Key West before churning through pretty much all of Florida.
I’m not gonna lie, I was a little apprehensive to go, not sure what we would find. But our vacation rental company said their homes sustained no damage and the island fared well.
And if anything, I figured our presence would be beneficial to the businesses and the people who make their living off tourism. Which is a lot. According to the Sun Sentinel, tourism accounts for more than half of all jobs in Monroe County. And 60% of the money spent there comes from tourists, according to numbers from the county’s Tourism Development Council.
Long story short.. it was a great decision. Key West was still kickin’ and looked great. And it’s a great place for a family-friendly vacation, with lots of affordable things to do. Check out some of these reasons why. (more…)
It’s summer! Let’s go to a theme park!.. you say. It will be fun!.. you say.
It’s the hottest time of the year! Let’s go somewhere that costs a fortune with thousands of other people for attractions that we’ll need to stand in line for, for hours at a time!.. is the reality.
Theme parks do have their challenges. And the best times to go, frankly, are not summer, spring break or around any holidays. But the reality is, those are busy times because that’s when people are more able to go.
So go in the summer you must. But first, check out this advice to make it a little easier. (more…)
I would estimate that I’ve spent about 960 hours on road trips with my kids. That’s a total of 40 entire days people!
And after 960 hours you learn some things you should do. Pack electronics loaded with lots of games and movies. Pack lots of snacks. Make regular potty stops and make them go whether they think they need to or not. (You can check out more tips from a dozen awesome moms in my previous post, Traveling With Kids.)
Along the way to 960 hours you also learn lots of stuff NOT to do. (more…)
Traveling with kids is, in a word, challenging.
In more words, it can make you want to stick a red-hot poker in your eye. But not all the time. Sometimes they fall asleep.
But seriously, it does take work to keep things from spinning out of control, or before you know it, you’re driving with the windows down praying for an exit while your little boy pees (or tries to) in a soda bottle. Let’s say that happened to a friend.
So here are some of my tips, gathered painfully over eight years of nine + hour road trips between the south and midwest with two little cranky humans. And some tips from 12 other moms who’ve been there, done that and lived to tell about it.. possibly over a glass of wine.. or to our therapists.. or over wine with our therapists. (more…)
One of the many, many perks of living in Florida is that you’re close to all sorts of entertainment options. And no other place in Florida packs it all in like the Orlando area. There are lots of theme park options that are family-friendly and affordable.
I know, I know.. every mom blogger posts about their trip to DisneyWorld or DisneyLand right? Well never fear, for mine will be the best one ever! No, probably not. But what I can offer you is a cheapskates guide to surviving Disney without needing a second mortgage on your house. (more…)
